Purpose Code

An RBI-mandated classification code used in foreign remittances to India. Identifies the nature of the transaction for regulatory reporting.

What is a Purpose Code?

A purpose code is a standardized code assigned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to classify the nature of every foreign currency transaction. When you receive an international payment, your bank must report the purpose code to the RBI through the EDPMS system.

Why Does It Matter?

Using the correct purpose code is important because:

  • FEMA compliance — incorrect codes can trigger regulatory scrutiny
  • Tax filing — purpose codes help your CA classify income correctly
  • Bank processing — banks may delay or reject transfers with incorrect codes
  • FIRA certificate — the purpose code appears on your FIRA document
